4 Year Old Program & Staff
Bush Kinder provides children with the time and an ideal environment for them to learn in. They will have the opportunity to play in the rain, roll down grassy mounds, balance along fallen logs, get involved in dramatic play, find insects and draw with sticks in the ground.
In 2018, Ellie V Pullin Preschool introduced 3 hours of supervised uninterrupted play in the bush for our four year old groups, using what nature has provided as learning materials. Children are natural learners. Bush Kinder provides children with the time and an ideal environment for them to learn in. They will have the opportunity to play in the rain, roll down grassy mounds, balance along fallen logs, get involved in dramatic play, find insects and draw with sticks in the ground. The opportunities for children to construct their own learning are endless. Each child’s developmental progression, advancing skill levels and particular interests will be noted by their teachers. The teachers will use this knowledge to support the children’s learning just as they do during normal sessions at kinder.
Research has shown that benefits of Bush Kinder include:
-
Increased confidence, motivation and concentration
-
Increased social, physical and language skills
-
Deeper conceptual understandings and respect for the natural environment
-
Increased social and imaginative play
-
More varied risk-taking behaviours and positive dispositions towards risk and challenge

What happens in a Bush Kinder session?
During a Bush Kinder session, children will be given the chance to engage in unstructured, free play. This gives children the opportunity to explore the environment at their own pace and uncover the many wonders of the Bush Kinder site. Children will be involved in some intentional teaching during their time at Bush Kinder. Teachers will actively promote children’s learning through worthwhile and challenging experiences and interactions that foster high-level thinking skills. They use strategies such as modelling and demonstrating, open questioning, speculating, explaining, engaging in shared thinking and problem solving to extend children’s thinking and learning. This can encourage new interests to form for children, and assists those children who are unsure within the Bush Kinder setting.

Michelle

My name is Melissa and I began working at Ellie V Pullin Pre-school in 2017.
I live locally, in fact, my daughters Maddy and Laura are EVP graduates!
I spent my previous years working as an Integration Aide in our local primary schools assisting children with additional needs.
After being lucky enough to complete a placement at EVP, I realised Early Childhood was the setting most aligned to my own personal beliefs and philosophies about education.
I love to be outside and incorporate environmental awareness into daily learning activities.
I believe children learn through hands-on experiences, allowing them to wonder, investigate and build their own knowledge whilst being challenged by a supportive and intentional learning program.

My name is Andrea, I commenced at EVP Preschool in January 2013.
I’m married and have two amazing children Keely and Zac.
I've lived in Ringwood all my childhood, but moved to Lilydale after I got married.
My brother used to actually do Ellie V Pullin’s gardening every 2nd Sunday when we were teens, she was a beautiful lady, very kind, great laugh on her and knew how to tell a good story.
Some of my favourite things to do include spending time with my family and friends and walking my two cavoodles.
I enjoy a walk on my own, and when I have time I love to bake and read.

My name is Michelle, and 2020 is my first year at Ellie V Pullin Pre-School as an Assistant with the Honey Pots Group.
In 1996 I completed an Associate Diploma in Children's Services and have been working with children in a variety of settings since 1987.
I am married with two wonderful (grown up) children, living in Upwey.
In my spare time I like to go bushwalking, garden, water ski, read, practice yoga & create art (not all at once....)

I am really enjoying my time working with the very positive and creative team at Ellie V Pullin Pre School and it's great to be a part of a community/family focused kindergarten.
I very much enjoy engaging with children and being part of their learning journey, building relationships and watching children developing confidence in many areas as they take on new challenges, make new friends, create, investigate, learn and grow.
